Hence the idea to publish a kind of operational guide for all those confronted with the "dark matter" of our 21st Century crises. In his latest book Patrick Lagadec addresses the challenge: how to navigate the unknown. The book condenses years of research and field experience in the management and piloting of 'out-of the-box' crises. It is not only designed for leaders but also for citizens eager to rethink their own perspectives, visions and paths. It has been designed around a series of imperatives: anticipating, detecting, reacting, inventing and mobilizing. Each of these imperatives is explored according to three dimensions · challenges obliging us to redefine the stakes; · pitfalls when confronted with shock and the unknown; · and lastly leads that can hopefully provide crisis management today with a new grammar of practice. The stakes are so vast that it would be tempting to publish very long books. But overworked leaders demand brevity. Moreover, the goal cannot and must not be to give "all the answers" but to enable the readers to forge their visions, to shape their answers, and to use generic methods creatively. In fact, it seems that concision of design is crucial when trying to prepare leaders and other stakeholders for unknown territories and this has been the trickiest challenge. It was also decided to deliver a document that would offer numerous short illustrations from case studies and investigations in the field. Navigating the unknown demands such direct links with concrete situations. Finally, as the subject is clearly a grave one, it required the odd breath of fresh air. A former corporate leader was called to draw specific cartoons for each chapter of the book. In a few strokes of the pen, these cartoons can inspire a lot. Here too, dealing with the unknown demands invention.
